Tom Jones Production Photograph“Tom Jones: The Musical” is about as much fun as you can have with your clothes on. Its bawdy 18th-century rakes, ladies, and gentlemen are often itching to be out of theirs. The entire musical is a delight that deserves a real New York run.

You might remember rakish, goodhearted foundling Jones from Albert Finney’s performance in the Academy Award–winning 1963 movie of Henry Fielding’s 18th-century novel. The cast‘s voices bring panache to George Stiles’ hummable tunes and the witty lyrics of Paul Leigh. Audience members left whistling.

Tom Jones Production Photograph...Other terrific numbers include “Just Wait” and the love song “When I Wed,” the latter sweetly punctuated by a hand-held fluttering bird puppet. A muff, one of the few props not mimed, is hilarious as a double-entendre token of love. The witty costumes by Pamela Scofield include demure but transparent hoop skirts, complemented by Gerard Kelly’s hornets’-nest and abstracted wigs. This high-spirited musical is a romp with a heart of gold."

…The audience gave a rousing standing ovation opening night, and howled, applauded and laughed throughout this hectic, hilarious coming of age tale of a country boy, Tom Jones…

…The last number in Act I, “Sir!” is an instant classic! The show could get an award on this scene alone; the music, lyrics, stage doings, acrobatics, and acting are simply superb…”
